Originating from the Ming Dynasty, the Aoqun features a top (Ao) crafted from thicker fabrics, making it distinct from the lighter Ruqun. Since the Tang Dynasty, the Ao has gradually taken the place of the traditional shirt (Ru) in colder seasons, becoming a staple outer layer.
When temperatures dropped in ancient times, especially after autumn, women would commonly switch to wearing an Aoqun paired with a cozy cloak—this classic combo became a go-to winter outfit for warmth and elegance.
